Default Accidentally destroyed my credit card

I got my first credit card about six months ago, but could not figure out how to activate it online. So since I do not care much for using credit in the first place anyway, I buried it in the back of my wallet and figured I would activate it by phone eventually.

Last month I took a bunch of cards out of my wallet that I wanted to throw out. I cut them up because I guess I'm a little paranoid (they weren't CCs but mostly expired drivers license, student photo IDs and things like that), I didn't realize it at the time but I must have cut up my unused credit card as well since the only things left in my wallet are the basics!

I'm going on a trip soon and I would like to have that CC just in case of emergency. I really like the company (USAA, who handles my car insurance) so I would like to get one with them again. So I've never had experience with this, does anyone know if I can call up for a replacement or do I have to apply for a new one? Thanks!

First, you need to call the company that issued the card, in your case I would assume USAA. Since you never activated it, they may have canceled your account or someone else could have activated it and used it. I would also suggest checking your credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com to be sure no one has been using you card and check up on your credit reports if you have not done it recently. By law, you are entitled to a copy of 1 credit report from each of the 3 bureaus once a year so I suggest choosing one bureau every 3 months so you can always get a free credit report every 3 months to monitor your credit yourself for free. If you would like to check your FICO score, visit MyFICO.com at myFICO - FICO Credit Scores | Get a Free Credit Report Online It is not free to check your FICO but well worth it at least once a year or prior to applying for a large loan such as a car or mortgage. They also offer great free information that explains how your FICO score is used, calculated, how you can improve it, and much more.

Second, depending on your credit history and current score, you probably would be better off with a much better company and card. All credit cards are not created equal and getting a credit card through an isurance comapny doesn't sound good either. Some offer things such as cash back, rewards, lower interest rates, rental car protection, extended warranties on things you buy with the card, and much more. I would suggest taking a look at

CardRatings.com at Best Credit Cards - Compare 500+ Credit Card Offers with 20,000+ Reviews

and

Bankrate.com at Compare Mortgage Rates | CD Rates | Credit Cards Home Equity Loans Mortgages Best Rate Calculator Bankrate.com

You can find a great card that will meet all of your needs and maybe more. I personally like AMEX blue cash and Citi cash. If your just starting out, Although not my favorite, Capital One is generally friendly with younger people and people with limited or not to par credit scores. But, do check out the websites and compare the cards to fit your needs and wants. Be sure to use it wisely and pay it off, in full, every month.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Gosh there is no reason to go through all that crap. Just call them on the phone and they will re-issue you a new card. No big deal

Best of luck

No reason? How about the simple fact you should check you reports regularly anyways? Monitoring your own reports/credit should be on the top of your list. Or, that maybe someone has used or is using the card and you would never know unless you where denied a loan or checked your reports. Additionally, there are far better cards available to people, especially with good credit. If used correctly, you could make a decent chunk of extra money, have your purchases covered, have insurance on rental cars, lower interest rates and much more.

You should certainly monitor your credit report. But the quickest solution to cutting up your card, is to call and ask for a new one. If they canceled your account because you never activated it, follow up on the list of user_name's suggested cc's to find one that has the best rates / perks.
