Default account closed in error

i get paid monthly by cheque.if there is not a branch close you can use the post office who run along side them. i paid in my cheques early this month without realising that they had closed my account in error. Along side this happening, my cheques were cashed but as my account was non- excistant they ended up in transit so i was told. There was alot of money paid in and now i am getting told that i wont get it back!! i have been told many different things now by my bank and just want to no how to get the money back as soon as possible? The bank doesn't seem to want to take any responsibility for the error they admit to making.
