Cobra, or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, was passed to help assure that all individuals and their families have access to group medical insurance. COBRA is a continuation of your group health insurance policy to individuals who have lost their health coverage due to certain specified conditions, like employment termination. While COBRA can be very useful for those individuals who qualify, the policies can also be extremely expensive because you no longer have employer participation.

For eligible individuals, the COBRA plan offers coverage to beneficiaries for up to 18 months (36 months for certain exceptions) and includes the same benefits as the original group health care policy.

In my past dealings with Cobra I have found it useful, but a little pricey.

Hi,here is what i would do. find out what the cobra rate is. (its your premium + employer contribution + 2%) if you know for sure that you can afford it, and that HR will offer it to you (call and ask), go ahead and do what you have planned with the doctor. you will have to pay premiums starting from the day after termination, but you have a month to get it in.
