Default Best College Savings

Okay, so I may be starting a bit early (our son is four months old), but better early than too late right? Which is the best, and also safest investment option when saving for college?

I started a general mutual fund for my children. It's not tax deferred and it's not specifically for college. That way, when they get athletic or acedemic scholarships to the college or university of their choice, the money will still be available for them to use to purchase a home or start a business after graduating.

The more I read - the more I like Kelkat's advice. Always - ALWAYS explore your options.

Yes, I would agree with this advice as well. I prefer that my children can use the money however they see fit--not just be locked into using it for college.

I would look around the internet for resources. You can also go to the local library and look at their resources too.

Have the little ones work and save too...When us college kids pay for some of our own education it makes us think twice about going out to party or to study

Very good point. By having them contribute it gives them a sense of ownership on their education.
