Default Can Bankruptcy Prevent Me From Getting A Job?

I recently received a discharge from bankruptcy, it has not been a year yet, and I have fallen ill so I have not really tried to re-apply for a job yet. Before that bankruptcy, I had a stable job as lecturer at a community college, and I have gotten in so much personal issues and have fallen into debt, hence the bankruptcy. That was my one and only job after college it was pretty fine until it went wrong, now I'm just concerned about discrimination and prejudices. I am almost afraid to go out and find out for myself. Can somebody give me an advice. Thank you in advance.

The only case I'm aware of is if you were applying for a job in the "Financial" sector. I worked as a bank teller and on the application it asked me if I had ever declared bankruptcy? Even if it's not on your record anymore, you're supposed to answer YES to that question if it's true.

My advice to you... if you apply for a job and it asks you that question, answer it honestly. If you are then turned down from the job, just assume that they had a better candidate than you and that is was NOT from the bankruptcy. In my opinion most people don't care if you once had a bankruptcy (as it is so commonplace) and it does not reflect how good of a worker you are.

They will get all the information they need to know about you from your resume, your background check, and your interview.

Good luck!

Since your discharge was so recent, your credit report would be in bad shape, and since you have been ill too, is it right to presume that you haven't yet taken any step to repair your credit yet?And I think that as long as you are honest with your future employers regarding your history, and that you are confident about your teaching competency, the bankruptcy should not be a problem for you. Also I read somewhere that it is against the law for employers to discriminate against someone who's filed bankruptcy.

from what i have learn't it's more the financial type companies that check your credit rating more to see if your credit score is good and your not in a a bad financial way as if you got a good credit rating you seem more trustworthy.

Depending on what industry you apply to, an employer won't ask you for your credit score. Generally it's only when you are managing or making decisions that affect the management of other individuals' money. Other than that, you should be fine.
