Hello
I got accepted to a college in California. But I don't know how I would move there in terms of getting a place and getting enough money to live off until I find a job and get familiar with the place. My parents don't have enough money to help me, So I'm on my own. What do you guys recommend to me? |

Well at the very least you will have to come up with money to move out there. You can contact the college and see if they have discounted dorms or programs that can help you with those type of expenses. When I used to go to college I know the money I got from grants and/or student loans was sufficient enough to pay for housing, travelling, supplies, and other things in addition to tuition.
Maybe you can get an advance on a student loan, a grant, get a student credit card to use to get you out there, or a personal loan. If that fails you may have to find friends or family members who might be able to help you. I'd start by asking the school first if there is any programs to help you relocate or ways to get advances from grants and student loans. I am assuming you have those in place for this college because you haven't mentioned the cost of tuition just the cost of getting out there. You could also ask the school for student friendly employers or a job listing website for the area so that you can possibly apply for a position before you get out there. |

1. Where there is a college, there are jobs. I go to school in San Marcos, Texas. My school is about 32,000 students and the town has about 60,000 residence. There are plenty of places that will offer you a job. The hardest part about getting a college job is actually going out and looking for one.
2. Scholarships! Have you tried applying for any? I have a friend who works in the financial aid department here on campus. You would not believe how much money is out there for students in need. 3. I am going to assume you are starting in the fall of 2008. If this is the case, work as much as you can in the summer and save, save, save! 4. Have you considered other schools not in California? If you are open to other schools, you should look in to other colleges in your state...to avoid out-of-state tuition. I honestly think that if you have the discipline, you can make ends meet. It will be tough, but it can be done. |

Although I would avoid if possible, have you considered taking out student loans that allow you to take out extra for living expenses and other fees associated with college? Tuition Answer loans from Sallie Mae are an example of this type. This would help you find a place and live off of some of the extra money until you find a job. I recommend trying to save, but if you can't raise the funds, then this is a suitable option.

Hello everybody, I am a student of a community college. Are private student loans an option for a student attending a community college? The reason I ask is because all the student loan websites I look at, my community college is not an eligible school. Why is this? I mean are the lenders out there who will give me a loan? Please answer me. Thanks a lot.

Further, many lenders are getting out of the student loan business anyway. Too expensive for them. Again, a high default rate in the industry. Even the bigger players are taking their ball and going home. The Education Resources Institute (TERI), the largest nonprofit guarantor of private education loans in the country, has announced recently that it has filed for bankruptcy protection. You are going to be better off sticking with a government loan. It will be easier for you to get. Try everything else before you get a loan. Grants, scholarships, institutional grants offered by your school, state-level financial aid, or work full-time and go to school at night. All good choices. I would NEVER encourage you to take out a student loan. On my blog I have several posts about financing college. I'm a high school teacher, and I know the maze that you are going through to find enough money for tuition. |
