I really think that lending money to a friend is one of the worest things you can do. It can breakup a friendship real fast. But if you feel that you want to. I think the best way to do it is to have an agreement drawn up how it will be paid back and both parties sign it.

I try not to loan anyone anything. It's almost never a good idea.

If someone is tight for cash and we're out for dinner/lunch, I'll just pick up the tab. No money owed - no hard feelings to come.

If someone needs help getting through a financial situation and I have the means/inclination to help, I'll arrange a barter. I'll give you $Z upfront if you commit to doing X on Y day.

Out of curiousity - have you received your money back yet?
