Default FDIC for multiple accounts?

FDIC insurance is currently at $250,000 per depositor, per bank.

So, if I had a $240,000 certificate of deposit, and a checking account with a $15,000 balance, both at the same bank, would I be $5,000 under-insured?

Or, does my FDIC insurance coverage restart with a new type of account? E.g. If I have a $200,000 CD, and a $60,000 IRA, and a $20,000 checking account, all at one bank, is it all FDIC-insured?

Yes on the first case scenario you would be underinsured for 5k. You can either open accounts under different ownership under the same bank or just open another account with another bank.

The FDIC does not insure money invested in stocks, mutual funds, life insurance policies, annuities, or municipal securities, even if these investments were bought from an insured bank.

I'm aware of that. Tell me something I don't know.

onetwothreefourfivesx,

There are people here in this forum who don't know what Fin.Guru just said. People just starting out.. like the person who started this thread.. may not have known that little tidbit of information.

I believe he has a lot more to say and he deserves a little bit of mutual respect.

Everyone has something they need to learn, and everyone has something they can also teach.

Let's respect each other enough to give and receive without injecting random comments.

Hi,
I and my wife jointly own one checking, one savings and few CD accounts in Chase bank. Each of these accounts have different account numbers. Does it mean that each of these accounts are insured up to 100K or combined balance on all of these accounts together are insured up to 100K?
