Default Getting Something Off Your Credit.

I noticed that I have something still open on my credit report that has been paid along time ago. My problem is it was a store credit card that has since went out of business. How in the world do I go about getting a release from them stating it has been paid? There are other stores still open but they don't have my information because it was from so long ago. This is driving me nuts. Never would have even noticed it was still open but I had to get a credit report and noticed it.

Any chance you can get it wiped from your record directly through the credit agency?

I would suggest contacting one of the credit reporting agencies. They have, on their websites, a place where you can dispute anything that's on your report. If you go to their website and dispute the record, they can either have it removed, or give you the information to have it removed. That's what we did, and it worked great.

Hope it works for you, as well.

Thank you, I will try the website. But I thought that you had to get something from the actual creditor showing that it was paid? That is where I am running into my problem. But I will contact the credit agency and see what advice they have for me.

If you dispute the account, they must remove it until it is verified. If the company is gone and there is no one to verify it, it will be gone for good.

I would also think that the burden of proof will be on them if they tried to collect so someone would have to come up with your information. But I agree with what has been said about contacting the agencies. Also, lenders take all this in consideration if you ever went for a loan. You could also send a certified letter to the customer service department. Someone from the other stores should have that information and just let them know the situation and request it to be taken off the credit file. Good luck
