Default Help me budget my paycheck

Is there an ideal way to budget your paycheck, I was looking at on msn and the 60% solution caught my eye. But that doesnt make since to me as I have heard that you should spend 30% on shelter then taxes are 20% (for me anyways) so this would give me 10% for my car, insurance, food, and utilities which doesnt seem possible...

Im looking for a break down similar to the 60% which would cover everything.

So if anyone can help I would appreciate it. Currently 24, making a little over 2k a month.

What is the 60% solution? That you should spend 60% of your pay cheque paying bills? If this is true I'm sure the 20% tax is not included in that 60%. 30% on shelter (rent or mortgage), 30% on other bills, 20% goes to tax, 10% for your savings, and 10% disposable. Unless you have a lot of debt to pay off I'd say putting at least 10% of your pay cheque into savings is probably a smart move.

I calculate all my budgeting using personal finance software.

I don't know what the 60% method is either, but here are the percentages I use. Keep in mind that they are averages. If you make a million a year you shouldn't spend 10% on food (I don't think you can eat that much). So it is OK if you are not right on for every category. So look at it and decide what is best for you and your family.

Charitable gifts 10-15%
Saving 5-10%
Housing 25-35%
Utilities 5-10%
Food 5-15%
Transportation 10-15%
Clothing 2-7%
Medical/ Health 5-10%
Personal 5-10%
Recreation 5-10%
Debts 5-10%

Just so I don't get accused of plagiarism, I got these from Dave Ramsey.

Really it's as easy as keeping an Excel spreadsheet with an income and outgo columns. Make a list of all of your income and all of your debts add them up and subtract your debts and payments from your income and get it to equal 0. Spend every dollar on something whether it be saving, bills, etc...

60% is perfect if you are single, and do not have much overheads.

Well, the general rule of thumb for building wealth is that you should at least save 10% of your earnings. This is called "paying yourself first."

Allocate about 20% towards paying down debt.

And the other 70% for everything else.

But ALWAYS pay 10% to yourself first before anything/anybody, and do it on a CONSISTENT basis.

You'd be surprised at how much you can accumulate in 1 year by just taking a 10% cut for yourself at all times.
