Each system has its own vulnerabilities. It only takes time before some hackers can find where they can attack the system but they always work 24 hours a day to get what they want. If you know the rules of investing online, you should know not to put too much money on your online accounts.

Generally in the industry we don't see hackers breaking into bank systems, it's usually fake e-mails to people saying things like "we lost all our information can you inform us your name, ssn, account numbers, DL# etc."
In reality it is easier for someone to take a picture of your debit card and use it elsewhere than it is to hack a bank system. If you bank online from home you are safe as long as you realize one simple fact. "If a bank is able to send you an e-mail, then they don't need any of your information." With the way processing is going, in 10 years if you aren't banking online then you won't be able to have a realistic idea of your accounts, especially when instantaneous check clearing comes online. You'll want to see everything up to the second. |

I opened up an ING Direct account, and they told me that the hackers have the hardest time breaking into their securitiy code..and have NOT been successful. Reason? They make it their priority to invest in leading edge security..and some of those leading edge security programs are coming out of Canada!

Also,I agree with you about the ATM scanning problem but they are changing that as well by bringing out a chip technology that will stop that. Thankfully! |

Exactly...We are so busy watching the news daily soaking up the medias terror tactics scaring the public to think they are not safe from their neighbor so they buy a handgun. Even though crime rates have consistently been going down...gun sales and paranoia is way up. America has 11,000 + gun murders a year while every other country has 200 or less. Japan has only 29. Canada 120. What is it with the promotional news we have on death, shootings, for what to instill fear in the people? In regards to a online bank account, be careful... the internet always has extra doors to open, even when one is "locked". |

I use HSBC here in Hong Kong and the steps they use to ensure security is almost a little too much. They provide an "token" which changes the password every minute. The downside is if you type it wrong 3 times they lock you out and to activate again is a real pain. Online banking is great when you see how long lines are.
