Default How to do to your credit what fire does to gasoline!

I work in a bank, and as a bank employee you hear stories of really stupid things people do. Today I saw someone ruin their credit score, and so I'll describe it as a how-to. [some of this isn't exactly as it happened, after all I do have to maintain confidentiality.]

((!!THE FOLLOWING IS BAD FINANCIAL ADVICE, IF YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS YOU WILL RUIN YOUR CREDIT!!))

Step 1: Open up a checking account with a credit card that has a $20,000 limit. Attach credit card to checking account for overdraft protection.

Step 2: You now have $20,000 in available credit, go buy a TV, car, and ski-boat, return to bank to finance a truck so you can pull the ski-boat.

Step 3: Make the exact minimum payment on both the credit card and the loan every month, keep using card if you have some kind of dent taken out of it by accidentally paying too much.

Step 4: Start writing checks til you overdraw your account (it's easy, just get a TV for the bathroom too)

Step 5: Ignore ALL mail from the bank, they'll probably just try to sell you something stupid like a money market anyway.

Step 6: Decide to "get a hold of" your finances, attempt to pay off credit card from overdrawn checking account, after borrowing money from relatives to get you back in the positive.

Step 7: When the payment doesn't go through, go into the bank and yell at the first person you see, (probably a teller) and make sure you're in a hurry because sitting down with a personal banker to help solve the major account issues "sounds boring."

Step 8: Get a singing telegram from the bank informing you of your exact overdraft amounts and credit card debt, and also when you must pay the overdrafts off to avoid having your account closed and your cool vehicles taken away.

Step 9: Enjoy walking past the bank with your "toys" sitting out front with for sale signs on them, "that car's worth Waaay more than $2000" you think to yourself.

Step 10: Become "that crazy b*tch that threatened to come back with guns" to all the people at the bank, no bank will let you have an account, and you can't get a new job because of your bad credit score.

Reading that is like a nightmare but oh so true. I hope I never see even a portion of that problem. But it is like a snow ball effect.

Those are the kinds of people we make fun of at work, overdrawing an account is actually grounds for termination, so we keep our balances fairly secure.

Sorry Maxy but it seems you've been suckered into one of the many free credit report scams out there. "No upfront charges" is just another way to say "Pay nothing now but we are going to nickle and dime you to death for the rest of your life". If you want to get your credit reports just go to annualcreditreport.com where you pay nothing, ever, by getting your credit reports yourself directly from the three major credit bureaus. And if you need any information regarding credit you could simply check out the FTC website, where again, you pay nothing for.
