Question Military Member in need of help!

Hello everyone,

I am currently in debt of about $16,683. This debt was created when I was in my college days. When I was about 18 I started applying for credit cards. I stopped paying all of the credit cards along time ago, the harrassing phone calls stopped, and for the most parts the letters stopped coming in the mail. Now that I am older and much more wise, I am looking to repay my old debt. Currently I am deployed to the war zone in support of OIF. Positives of being here is I have no bills, and it is quite hard to spend your money. I make about $1600 a month, and I can use every penny to repay my debt. Now comes the part where I am lost. I looked up my credit report and the agencies that hold my owed balance are showing "Potentially Negative Closed" which is no suprise to me, but if I have no open accounts to payback, who do I contact? The last collection agency? Any help would be great. Also I dont have any original credit accounts or credit card number since this was near 6 years ago.

Thanks for your help

I would call/e-mail the last collections agency and see if you still have an outstanding balance. It could be that they halted your payments due to your deployment. I would ask just so you don't come home, and get a nasty court document saying you've been served. Good luck with everything! I'm sure someone else on here can offer more help.

NO NO NO!!! DO NOT REPAY ANY OF IT! There is a 7 year (maximum) statute of limitations on debt (less in most states) - YOU ARE ALREADY BEYOND THAT. IF YOU PAY EVEN $5 ON ANY OF THOSE DEBTS IT WILL RESET THE CLOCK AND THE STATUTE STARTS OVER. Morally - sure you want to pay it back - but better to donate to charity. You are legally NOT OBLIGATED to repay. If you weren't sued - and there was no judgments entered against you - then YOU ARE FREE.

Please - you are already serving your country - use the money for yourself. You deserve it!
