Default New College Graduate

Hello everyone!

I will be graduating May 2010 and am very fortunate that I have a job lined up for me. I will be making a gross salary of $57,000 which is decent especially in these times, the only thing is - I have no clue how to budget this money. How much to spend, to save, to invest etc. I downloaded a budget template for excel but that will only get me so far. Neither high school nor college have prepared me for this in any way. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks!!!

If you don't remember anything I say, try to remember this. Your income is your greatest wealth building tool. What I mean by that is when you start having large amounts of debts (mortgage, Credit Cards, Cars, etc...) you have decreased your disposable income. The more income you can use for investing and buying things with cash the wealthier you will some day because of Compound Interest.

57000 is not much money in NYC or LA but its a lot of money lets say in South Dakota, since you quote the location as Westchester, NY I believe most of your income will go for living expenses, try to put at least 100 to 200$ away into a savings set up, build a nest egg, never spend your tax refund, put it straight to a 401k, forget Starbucks and Sandwiches on the go, keep money tight, any dime you can put away forget about it immediately, no going back for things which loose value, computers, cars etc loose value, get some credit cards , at least 3 over the next 6 month, use them for groceries only, every month another one, repay them immediately, keep you head cool, no impulse shopping, ok you did not buy much in college, but go easy on shopping, a good thing is to always sleep on it before buying, remember you are more likely to be hit by lightning than to run into an offer which can be found somewhere else (and mostly cheaper).
