That's a pretty interesting article. However, some of the measures do seem a bit extreme.

Yeah a couple of them seem pretty extreme to be honest but they could be useful as well.

I don't have a cell phone or cable/satellite TV. That probably gives me an extra $1200 a year.

sleep in airports, don’t buy a TV - watch YouTube, raise your own chickens, don’t eat (fast once in a while), shave less often, turn out the lights (save electricity) & meditate in the dark (reduce your stress levels)

I know he's kidding, but what sort of things do you guys do to save money?
I love to cook and feel you save a lot when you cook yourself, making multiple meals from one idea. I'm also a good cook and find there is not that much out there anyways that gets me excited, at least where I live in the Orlando area.

One way to save on trips and to get free hotels whether it is in the US or Europe, is belong to the Hilton Honors reward program. I went to Europe for 3 weeks staying at the Hilton free because of this.

My wife and I don't shop at Aldis (I would but she thinks that's a bad idea) but we estimate that going out to eat for us costs $30, compare that to the chili I made last night 10 servings for $7.00 or $1.40 for both of us, it will feed us for a week and saves us $143 were we to eat out every night.

Chili freezes well too so you can buy the ingredients on sale, make a lot, and still have a variety in your diet.

I do agree with you. I'm pretty thifty or tight, as my friends would say, but I do like a latte now and again. But there will always be extremes!

The good thing about cooking at home too, is you control the ingredients, so there's no inspecting the menu and having to tell anyone what you don't like, it's as spicy as you like it, has everything you like in it...I don't get excited about eating out anymore either. I recently went to a P.F. Changs for someones' birthday, it's an expensive chinese restaurant, granted the service was fantastic, I've had better food at home.

I haven't gone shopping for close in forever. Being female this has been really hard for me but it's been so worth it. I've managed to pay $20,000 of school debt off in 2 years and save about 5k on top of that.

We don't buy things when we actually need them. Instead, we anticipate what we are going to need and watch sales closely, check out online vendors, and wait for the best deal.

Also, this year we replaced ALL of our lightbulbs with energy efficient ones and have seen at least a 20% savings in electricity because of it.

Next, we're checking out some of the FlexFuel and Hybrid vehicles.

Just make sure you are changing for the right reasons. Do NOT have a financial planner/advisor help you with a budget. It is not their job to find money for you to save. They help because they want you to sacrifice today for your long-term goals. You have to find a balance between what you spend and what you save. Shoot for 15-20% savings rate, and don't don't don't put all of that in a 401k.
