Default Software for accounts?

What sort of software do you use to do your accounts?

I use Excel but I've thought of using Sage, but figured maybe it was a bit more than I actually needed.

I've use Excel as well, and while I think it's pretty good, I would certainly entertain something different so I'm curious to hear comments as well.

I think sage is usually more than what a normal person needs but I've been told to at least use excel as going through my written notes is starting to get a bit messy!

At the end of the day, it's whatever you're comfortable with. Sage is possibly over the top for what many people need - which is a simple record of monthly income and outgoings.

2c.

I really dislike excel so til I can think of anything better to use I'm just sticking with a notebook and a calculator. I don't know what it is with excel but I just dont like using it at all.

Quicken has some home software for tracking personal finances (typically less than $40 US). A program like this can be useful - but ya gotta use it - otherwise it's just an expensive frisbee.

Yes, lots of people use quicken software. I personally don't have too many complications in my finance and don't feel the need for any kid of software.

There is a long list for such software that will cater to whatever currency one is using, Intuit, Quickbooks, Turbocash, Moneysoft, Microsoft Small Business Accounting, (SBA) and more are good to try.

Excel for me is the easiest way for my financial list. I'll do everthing in excel like inventories, daily income records and any other that are relevant to computation. No need to have a calculator to compute, all you have to do is to feed desired formula then excel will work it out. No headaches at all.

Consider making your own pen and paper worksheets as well to get started, there are tons of excel gurus who could turn it into an easy-to use spreadsheet for you.

I take it we are talking about personal accounts here?

Sage would be over the top I expect, bit too much power and best used with bookkeeping knowledge. I use Sage primarily now for clients (accounting, and have used near dozen other packages too) but expect something more like Excel or even Quicken would be more suitable.

What are your needs? What sort of transactions, assets etc do you need to track?

With Excel there is a wealth of help online, using something like Google do a full search on what you might like to know such as 'intro finding way around excel' or 'personal income expense tracking excel'... just guessed those to give an idea, searching 'help excel' is not going to make things easy.

I have been using QuickBooks for years .. QB is pretty easy to use butI have also dabbled in MSN Money Track and that seems to be a little more user friendly if you are not familiar with accounting.

If you are not familiar with getting "borrowed software" get familiar .. it will save you a ton of money .. you can find information on any program at demonoid.com

Excel is a spreadsheet program. It could be used for some accounting processes, but that would be a lot of effort.

I don't think Mark is looking to turn Excel into a bookkeeping product.
