About a week ago I saw an ad on TV advertising a piece of software that monitors investments and tells you when to buy and when to sell...has anyone heard of this or is it a joke?

You may want to look at it as a joke but that's just my opinion.

0) Buy Low - Sell High

1) Buy Low - Sell High

2) Buy Low - Sell High

3) Buy Low - Sell High

Well believe it or not there is software out there called Buy Low - Sell High!

That's not a joke.

The joke is that anyone would believe it's that simple.

Just buy the software and you'll be ready to compete with Chuck...

...and go from rags to

Buy Low, Sell High
works best when it is:
Buy Low, Add Value, Sell High.

That is called "being in business".

Yep, it's real. There's about a billion of them. There's two ways to make money in the market. Come up with a good formula and don't tell anyone while using it yourself. Sell a formula in software to others. #1 makes more money and stops working when you tell other people becuase then they start predicting the software.

Software strategies are all based on some sort of market timing or technical analysis, typically involving charts/formulas. These strategies have been backtested, or the results filtered, to give you a portrayal of the best results. However, most people have illusionary gains, because their gains are eaten up by transaction costs, service fees, and taxes.

Very few of these software companies and strategies are legit. Most of them are designed similar to pyramid schemes. Just like newsletters, they can be designed to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, and then eventually they stop working. Sometimes they also are tied to specific brokerage firms that want you to use these systems with their brokerage accounts so they can get all the fees/commissions.

The market is unpredictable (moreso today than in the past) because of 2 things:
FEAR
GREED

There is no chart or strategy that can accurately predict human emotion. What these strategies typically try to do is capitalize in the change of emotions, the ride up and the ride down. Problem is, this has shown little success and what gains actually exist are mitigated by commissions and fees.

Don't even get me started on newsletters...
