Splitting Retirement in a Divorce

Can/do retirement accounts get split up and/or somehow shared in the event of a divorce? What if one spouse was an at-home parent for any part of the marriage?

I believe that whoever was putting the majority of the money into the fund keeps it, however that may not be correct. It might even depend on each case, sorry Im not much help on this one, but thats my input.

Yeah, definitely one for the divorce lawyers.

I know in the UK a pension can be regarded as an asset and subject to such claims, but as I've never been there, at present I'm not sure whether it's a blanket issue or whether specific conditions need to apply.

From what I hear in and around where I live it (everything ) is split 50 percent.This is from a local Judge so he should know. But if the lawyers don't think of it then it may not get split. I have heard of cases where the pension was never touched just because it wasn't thought of. Better to get a lawyer though. I may be in the same situation very soon. : (
