Default Student Loans

I have about $60k in student loans. I only worked a few years after graduation and am now staying home with my 3 kids. I don't see how I can go back to work anytime soon as all my kids are 2 and under and won't be in school anytime soon. We can't afford to pay on my loans with my husband's salary.

They have been on deferment for soooo long.

So what happens if I don't pay them? I know my interest keeps going up and up and up.

I'm not looking for advice telling me to go to work. It is not an option for us at this time.

Thanks

The problem is that the money is from the Federal Gov't and it's not even bankruptable. Your husband will need to get more work and maybe you can do something from home. There is always a way.

I agree with this. You need to do some extra effort to come out of this credit crunch. Find a work at home type for your self and plan your finances accordingly.

If you leave them in deferment then they will continue to amass penalties and interest. You can never get away from student loans, unless you enlist in the armed forces (which I know someone that has done so to get out of paying of his high amount in student loans). Other than that, it'll just be the elephant in the room staring at you until you pay it off.

As long as you live in the USA they will stay if they are federal. Worst case scenario they can garnish 15% of your wages without even needing a judgment.

Not paying your student loans will not just be your problem, they will become your husband's as well. Ambitious debt collectors will find their way to him since they know he has a steady paycheck. I'm just warning you now.

I know nothing about finance (I'm here to learn) but I know a hell of a lot about student loans and the fact of the matter is you're going to have to get some entrepreneurial spirit, buckle down, and make things happen. What is your degree in? Can you work from home? Those student loans won't go anywhere and the longer they stay there, the longer you're screwed. I don't understand what you mean by "not needing advice about going to work." Money doesn't grow on trees, you have to work for it, and if you want to pay off that loan, you'll have to work for it in some way or another. Are you able to pay your other bills alright?
