Sounds like a recipe for disaster, i know. But i've tried researching other options.
I reside in Los Angeles as a contractor, we've been here for about 13 years. My mother however resides in our home country, Argentina. She's had a very common heart defect called Mitral Valve Prolapse for several years, but it's been getting worse as she ages. Basically the valves in your heart that shut to prevent blood from flowing backwards are not closing properly and there's a back flow. She's had chest pains, anxiety, panic attacks and faints frequently. All the doctors in argentina did was put her on antiarrhythmic drugs. About one year ago she developed a clot on the valve because of an infection which traveled to her brain and gave her a stroke. She was rushed to the ER and the clot was removed. I traveled to see her and stayed a couple of weeks. It doesn't seem as if there's any permanent damage. The health care in argentina it terible. I've met with her doctors, had her medical history translated to english by a medical translator and met with several cardiologists in the states. The treatments and proceedures suggested by the doctors in argentina would be either ineffective, outdated, dangerous or all of the above. I narrowed it down to one cardiologist who i trust. We came to agree that the best course of action is to try to repair the chordae holding her valve (the valve is like a parachute and the chordae are the strings of the chute), there's a chance he might not be able to repair the chordae, in which case he'll replace it with an artificial plastic valve. He suggested to do this while she's still healthy enough for surgery. I flew her in to meet the surgeon and get some preliminary exams done. And now comes the big problem... She's not covered by any kinda relief in the US, argentina sure isnt' going to help. So i'll have to pay for her treatment. All the exams, flying her in, pre-op, surgery, and post op will cost about $70,000. If there aren't any complications. (Which with our luck, there will be). I have about $4,200 saved, a credit card with a $12,000 limit, about 750 on my FICO score and make about $41,000/ year. I've qualified for unsecured loans as high as $25,000 over 5 years with rates of 13 to 23%. I know someone who works at an auto dealer, who told me a man once walked in and purchased two cars at the same day. One at ford and one at toyota. Instead of purchasing one, at a low rate, waiting for the new loan to appear on his credit history and buying the second car at a higher rate, he bought both on the same day at a low rate, since the dealers didn't know about each other's loans. I've been thinking of doing the same thing.( I'm not even sure it it's posible) Borrowing money from 3 banks before the loans appear on my credit report. If i managed to borrow $75,000 on a 5 year term, even at the highest rate (seems to be 23%) my monthly payments would be $2,114.29 Which i can afford right now, even without taking more jobs or a second job. (which I will regardless). I want to keep my saving and credit card money available for any complications or unexpected surprises. I understand it's a moral gray area. I've struggled with this for a while, my friends say i should do it, my priest doesn't think it would be moral for me to do so, but that god would forgive me, my mother would forbid me to do so, but i dont want to worry her so i haven't mentioned it to her. She cared for me as a single mom for 19 years, and there's absolutely no way i'm letting her suffer on the way she has. I can take the payments, and 5 years is not a long time if it'll get rid of her anxiety, pain and the panic attacks. I'd appreciate any input from people with experience on this field. |
