Default Trying to get a personal loan...

In the next month, I am need a personal loan for about $3,000 - $4,000. Me and my wife only have one vehicle and need another. She also needs a little money to help pay for some school classes. I am trying to get the smallest loan I need and $3,000 should do it.
My credit has been maxed for about a year, but I just paid most of it off. My credit limit is only $300, and now there is only a balance of $85.(I am only 19, so I have only had credit for about a year and a half). We want to try and use my wifes car as collateral for the loan (but it is in her name, not mine, so I don't know if I need to get that changed to my name). The car is in fair condition, just small cosmetic damage, mainly just the paint flaking and stuff, nothing bad. But either way, the tax value of the car is about $1400 (1994 Corolla). I think my credit score is 600 something, not for sure, going to check at the end of this month on myFico. I have missed a few payments, but never more than about a week late a few times, due to my hours at work. But work is in order now. But I was just wondering if any of you have any ideas or suggestions and if you think I would be able to get the loan?

Sorry for such the long post, but thank you for any advice.

She should look into federal loans for school. They will be a much lower interest rate and unsubsidized loans (interest accumulates the life of the loan and is paid by you) is available for everyone taking continuing education. She may qualify for subsidized loans (the government pays the interest whiles she's in school and she pays the remaining interest after school) if she demonstrates financial need. Have her fill out the FASFA online and speak with her financial aid office. A bank or anyone else will not use your car as collateral since the value is not worth the loan amount or more. Additionally, both your names would have to be on the car title and loan, or the car would have to be in your name with the loan in your name. You would be better off trying to use the new car as collateral but you would have to finance over 6-7K generally to make it worth it for a lender. You might also be better of getting a loan with your wife and you, especially if her credit score is better. With subprime credit it may be hard to finance a car worth enough to get a loan and if you do get a loan it will have high interest, probably 12%+. I would avoid Buy Here Pay Here places as well. These places will sell you a crap car with extremely high interest rates, like 20%+. They are like Payday loan places for cars. In the end, you would be better off paying $2-4K cash and getting a reliable car from a private owner but it may be hard for you financially if you have no money saved. Maybe other alternatives would be better for a short time until you could get some money saved such as riding a bus, walking, subway, car pulling, ect.

Hope that helps and good luck.
Keep us posted.

She is already getting FASFA. But FAFSA won't pay for phlebotomy classes. I was going going to try and get a small $3,000 loan maybe through Wachovia (my bank), USAA, or Citi, is the only places I really know where to get the loan. My credit is also better than my wifes. This is kind of why I needed a personal loan. Just needed a small amount to get a car, her class, and ect. Any more ideas? Can't really walk 30 miles to school or work.

All 3 places you mentioned are going to be really hard places to get loans at with sub-prime credit and no real collateral. You might try a credit union. They are a a lot easier to get loans at and better interest rates. You will probably have to become a member though. Another idea might be a part time job for you and/or her or maybe work/study for her classes. Also, FASFA is not just grants, she could get unsubsidized loans to pay for anything educational with an interest rate probably below 7%.

ever asked the school if they provide direct assistance? as far as the car goes look at a new one from Korea, they just lowered their loan requirements and you may get lucky, depending on your miles look at a lease to tie you over for a year or two
