I would first suggest that you just get a debit card and save money to make big purchases.
If you choose to get a credit card, you might look at getting a gas card to start. It will give you limited use and still build your score. Remember, using credit only to build your score is not necessary, just learn to live on less than you make and save money. Good management of money will lead to a good score anyway.

in my point of view a secured credit card is a good for you, even better than a joint/co-signer card.

You can start with a credit card with low credit limit, but once you build a good credit history, by paying your bills on time, they'll increase your credit limit.
