If you don't have anything on your credit you may have to find a significant other who does to apply for joint credit or ask about a "secured credit card".

A secured credit card is basically you putting down the money upfront incase you don't make payments on your card. A bank can give you a secured credit card with a limit of $1000 if you gave them $1000 to hold onto incase you didn't pay.

A secured credit card is a good idea, even better than a joint/co-signer card. When you have someone co-sign, they are taking some risk to their credit if you don't pay. You could ruin 2 credit histories at once.

The only thing about a secured credit card is coming up with the initial cash. Start with $500, manage things effectively and you'll do just fine. Make sure you know not only when payment is due, but exactly how the card works, when interest is charged, etc.

I agree, a secured CC is way better then to have a co-signer on a non-secured CC.

I like the idea of a secured credit card as well. It eliminates a lot risk on the parties involved.

Whatever you go for, look to ensure your credit card is paid off at the end of each month, so that you effectively use it like a debit card. That way you're using it for the extra consumer protections, rather than opening a line of debt you may soon struggle with.

Good suggestion Brian.

Everyone should pay their card off every month if possible so they can enter the card's grace period and not be charged interest. Most cards come with 20-25 day grace periods.

Low interests rates always look attractive, but since you have no credit...just try to see what places will accept you.

Some offer a little more leeway than others.

Everyone is giving some great suggestions here, if you pay it off each month and don't let the debt accumulate, you should do fine. If you ever get to the point where you don't pay in full at month's end...put it in a drawer and don't use it until it's paid off again.
