Wife's Credit card dept caused by Ex husband

Hi,

My wife has a large balance on her credit card that was run up by her ex husband on there joint account

She is now struggling to pay this off debt - her ex husband offers/refuses to offer any form of payment

She has taking him off the cards. Is the anything we can do to get him to pay. The entire balance was made by him

Surely if it's a joint account then it's in his best interest to pay off the debt too because it will be his credit record as well as hers that gets a black mark?
